Muscle relaxant treatments (also known as anti-wrinkle treatments) utilise natural proteins produced by bacteria and are strategically administered to specific areas for a temporary disruption of nerve-to-muscle signalling. This induces relaxation in overactive muscles, smoothing wrinkled skin and effectively diminishing fine lines and wrinkles by easing the tension in underlying muscles.

They are widely sought after for facial enhancement, with popular treatment areas such as frown lines, crow’s feet, forehead worry lines, bunny lines, droopy eyebrows, gummy smiles, lip flips, jawlines, corners of the mouth, chin creases, chin dimples, upper lip, platysmal bands (vertical neck lines), and hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating in underarms, forehead, and upper lips).

Frequently Asked Questions

How long do muscle relaxant treatments last?

You will see results three to five days after your appointment, but full results are seen within two weeks and can last between two and four months. It’s important to note that most men tend to require a higher dosage than women. Typical side effects encompass slight swelling and bruising at the injection site. Occasionally, slight disparities in results may arise, particularly in the treated area like the forehead, but these can be rectified during a follow-up appointment at the two-week mark. A few patients might encounter headaches in the initial days post-treatment. Infrequent adverse events involve potential muscle asymmetry due to migration of the relaxant into adjacent muscles, or a rare occurrence of lid or brow drooping, known as ptosis.

Can muscle relaxant injections be used to treat excessive sweating?

Sweaty underarms (hyperhidrosis) and other affected areas like hands and feet can have a significant impact on self-confidence. There are surgical and medical options for treatment but an easy way to block the sweat glands is to apply multiple injections of the same wrinkle relaxers to stop the nerve impulse from reaching the sweat glands and effectively stop excessive sweating. It can stop excessive sweating in problem areas for four months up to one year.

Are muscle relaxant injections safe?

Wrinkle relaxers are considered safe when injected at the proper dosage, in a sterile setting and performed by a qualified professional. Like any medical procedure, there are potential risks associated with it. Typically confined to the treated area, these risks can include bruising, eyelid drooping, headaches, injection site redness, and muscle tenderness.

At what age should I consider muscle relaxant injections?

The ideal age to initiate treatments involving anti-wrinkle injections varies significantly among individuals. It is essential to discuss your skin type and personal skin-related concerns with your provider when making this decision. Wrinkle relaxer treatments can help reduce the lines that come from making facial expressions and slow down the growth of lines that stay on your face even when you’re not making expressions. Treatments can also be started if you already have static lines and you’re looking to make your face appear fresher and younger.

What are the side effects of muscle relaxant injections?

Side effects of muscle relaxant injections can include redness, swelling and bruising at the injection sites. Additionally, it’s not uncommon for some individuals to encounter headaches in the hours or days following their initial treatment.

What's the difference between muscle relaxant injections and dermal fillers?

Muscle relaxant injections work by temporarily stopping the normal motion of muscles into which they are injected. This treatment relaxes wrinkles that are the result of muscles repeatedly contracting in the same location. Fillers work by filling in the area underneath the skin and replacing lost volume.

Can I get muscle relaxant injections if I'm pregnant or breastfeeding?

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding unfortunately you cannot get anti-wrinkle injections. If you are trying to get pregnant, please notify us prior so we can take the appropriate steps as you cannot be pregnant on the day of treatment.

What should I avoid doing after muscle relaxant injections?

To allow the anti-wrinkle injections to perform optimally, we recommend that you avoid rubbing or massaging the injected area for at least four hours post-treatment, strenuous exercise for 24 hours, and wearing tight-fitting headgear that covers the forehead, lying on your front, drinking alcohol for at least 24 hours (before and after treatment) and applying makeup for at least 24 hours.

When is the best time to reschedule muscle relaxant injections?

When you notice the wrinkles that you had treated slowly begin to reappear, the treatment effects are slowly wearing off. We recommend to schedule treatments 12 to 16 weeks after your last treatment. Since the anti-wrinkle agent does not accumulate in your system, it is safe to top-up your treatments in the same area.

What do muscle relaxant injections contain?

Muscle relaxant injections that work by relaxing the facial muscles that cause lines contain botulinum toxin type A.
