Moles are growths on the skin that usually appear brown or black; however, they can change over time and may darken, grow, or even disappear as years pass. They form when skin cells, known as melanocytes, which produce the pigment that gives skin its natural colour, grow in a cluster instead of spreading throughout the skin. They can develop anywhere on the skin, alone or in groups, and most people have 10 to 40 moles by adulthood.

While most moles are harmless, some can develop into melanoma, a severe form of skin cancer. It’s important to monitor moles for any changes that might indicate a problem, such as asymmetry, border irregularity, colour changes, diameter enlargement, or evolving characteristics over time (often remembered with the acronym ABCDE).

Mole and Skin Tag Removal

Should I Removal My Moles?

Skin tags, medically known as acrochordons, are small, soft pieces of skin that stick out on a thin stem. They are most commonly found in areas where the skin folds, such as the armpits, neck, eyelids, under breasts, and groin. Skin tags are benign and are thought to occur where skin rubs against itself or clothing, which might explain why they are often found in skin folds and creases. Unlike moles, skin tags do not have the potential to turn cancerous. They might be considered a cosmetic concern or cause discomfort in areas that frequently rub against clothing or jewellery.

Both moles and skin tags can be easily removed if they cause discomfort, pose a cosmetic concern, or if there’s a possibility of malignancy in the case of moles. Procedures for removal typically include cutting, freezing (cryotherapy), or burning off (electrocautery) for skin tags and more careful examination and excision for moles that might be at risk of being or becoming malignant.
